Our Freedoms

Our freedom in Christ Jesus is the central them of Paul’s letter to the Galatians. To be freed, then something or someone must have imprisoned us and held us captive. The verses below will give you a sense of what we have been freed from and what Christ Jesus has done for us. We were once condemned prisoners under the judgment of the law of God. We were also restricted by that same the law, with no hope of earning our freedom by observing or keeping it, that changed with and through Jesus.

Here’s what we are freed from:

  • The law which points out our transgressions. Galatians 3:19
  • We are no longer held captive or “shut up” as prisoners of sin. Galatians 3:22
  • From the law that held us as prisoners and captives. Galatians 3:23
  • We are no longer were enslaved or held in bondage to the basic principles of the world. Galatians 4:3
  • Freed from our imprisonment that not only separated Jews from Gentiles, but ethnicity and men and women. Galatians 2:14, 3:28

What Christ coming has done:

  • Jesus gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age. Galatians 1:4
  • On the cross He took on the curse of the law for us. Galatians 3:13
  • Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. Galatians 3:13

Because of Jesus and our freedom we are now:

  • Are justified, made right with God, by faith in His son Jesus. Galatians 2:16
  • We have been crucified with Christ and He lives with us. Galatians 2:20
  • By faith children of Abraham. Galatians 3:7
  • We are Abraham’s heirs according to the promises of God. Galatians 3:29
  • We are redeemed by Jesus so that we may be adopted as God’s children. Galatians 4:4-5
  • We can call God Dad or daddy, because of our personal relationship with Him. Galatians 4:6
  • We are no longer slaves but children of God. Galatians 4:7
  • We are now children of the free woman Sarah. Galatians 4:31
  • Free to walk and live by the Spirit and not our fleshly desires. Galatians 5:16, 25
  • Free to show God’s character and nature. Galatians 5:22-24
  • Free to bear each other burdens. Galatians 6:2

Two key verses regarding our freedom

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
